BUILDING PERMITS
FIGURES FOR JULY
A big drop in the value of building permits issued in the larger centres during July is noted by the Abstract of Statistics, which states that the total of £769,953 is £102,390 lower than for the month of June. The value of alterations and additions to existing buildings (£117,917) showed a decrease of £21,915, new dwellings (£463,158) an increase of £78,662, and other new buildings (£188,878) a decrease of £159,137. The values represented by the three classes in July, 1940, were:— Alterations and additions to existing buildings, £130,797; new dwellings, £478,561, and other new buildings, £199,684.
The number of new dwelling permits included in the statistics for July, 1941, was 468, of which 235 were in respect of houses commenced by the housing construction branch of the State Advances Corporation. Comparative figures for June were 362 for all dwellings and 178 for the housing construction branch.
The figures relating to new buildings for the four centres show that during July there were 415 such permits issued in Auckland, 199 in Christchurch, 186 in Wellington, and 72 in Dunedin.
