SCARTEEN COMES SOLID
Mrs. J. Campbell, who claims the distinction •of being the only licensed racehorse trainer of her sex in the South Island, has done well with Wardress since leasing the Lord Warden mare from, Mr. D. W. Westenra. of Dunsandel. It was also her good fortune to win with Scarteen at the first time of asking, the Shambles gelding having been leased -from the same breeder. Scarteen has always been trained by Mrs. Campbell, but when he started racing as a three-year-old he carried Mr. Westenra's, colours. Unfortunately, his career was a somewhat chequered, one. althoueh the geldi ! ing did win a, double at Wingatui in December. 1939. in addition to being placed nn several occasions. He became effected in the wind., for which he underwent an operation, but he had \ six outings last, season before he snored over a mile and a quarter at the Hororata Meeting. A : blood parasite has also troubled him, but his trainer appears to have overcome these' setbacks and to have eot the eelding quite solid. A full-brother. Vintage, also met with disaster, a broken leg bringing his career to an abrupt stop. Lee Trouble. . Pleading. who; showed good form last season -as'" a three-year-old, has been overtaken b^ leg trouble and, has had to be given' a spell. By Solicitor General., he is from the Absurd— Eulogy mare Eulalie, winner of the i C.J.C. Stewards' Handicap. His place inthp Chokebore stable has be^en taken Iby Winning Rival, who has been recommissioned. , . . Gone South. Martial Lady, who is a half-sister to Beau Vite, was represented at Carterton by Dominate, a two-year-old who carries the colours'of Mr. Ralp'n Stewart: owner of Beau Vite. Mr. J. Jameson, of Masterton, who owns Martial Lady, has sent her south this season on a visit to the imported sire Battle Song, a son of Spinn Kop.
