WAR ON RABBITS

SUBSIDY PLAN

A subsidy on the wages of certain classes of men employed in the destruction of rabbits from now until March 31 next was announced yesterday by the Minister of Labour (Mr. Webb). The subsidy payable is £3 10s a week in respect of registered and eligible suitable unemployed men, and £3 a week in respect of men not actually unemployed but whose engagement on work of lesser importance is nearing a close and. whose experience would materially assist in the immediate objective of rabbit destruction.

It is not proposed that farms should be denied necessary labour, and one of the safeguards provided is that any man employed under the scheme will be made available for shearing or other farm seasonal work if required.
