U.S.S. MASSACHUSETTS
PART IN WAR OF LIBERTY
(Rec. 1 p.m.) NEW YORK, Sept. 23,
Speaking at the launching of the battleship Massachusetts, Colonel Knox, urging that the neutrality act should be immediately repealed, said America was at the water's edge of a grave situation. Recent events on the Russian front had made the prospect of victory dim. The casualties in Russia were greater than in any other conflict in history. The fighting there had a direct bearing on America's own situation. "Let us free the hand of our commander-in-chief, and give him every opportunity to help Brutain.
"It is possible that the battleship Massachusetts may have to participate in another fight for human liberty. It will participate in the task of seeing that the sea-lanes between this country and embattled Britain are kept free.
"Our six super-ships will be able to meet any enemy under any conditions. The Massachusetts was ready for launching six months ahead of schedule.
The six ships of the class, of 35,000 tons, cost about 75,000,000 dollars each. The Massachusetts is the fourth to take the water. These ships, believed to be the most powerful in the world, carry nine 16-inch guns.
