ORDER FOR EXECUTION

RUMANIAN GENERALS 1

CLUE TO CONDITIONS

LONDON, Septemblr 23.

The Cairo correspondent of the;, "Daily Telegraph" says that an order1 which has been made by General Antonescu for the execution of 12 Rumanian generals after they had demanded peace with Russia indicates the con- \ ditions in Rumania. The Germans are] exerting enormous pressure on Gen-j eral Antonescu to suppress the un-J willingness in the army to fight for' German aims.

The Germans are using blackmail byl encouraging the Iron Guard. Its leader, Horia Sima, after having been 1 condemned to death, was smuggled to^ Germany, and he is still there as a threat to Antonescu.

The boomerang nature of the Nazi oppression in the occupied countries is aptly described by the influential Swiss newspaper "Journal de Geneve."

"In all the occupied countries," states the newspaper "relations be-j tween the people and the German. authorities are getting worse. It would be a mistake to attribute thisi reaction to Communists; it is equally, possible that hunger and misery re-; suiting from the food shortage induce acts of desperation.

"In Norway the resistance Kas assumed such proportions that' it can only be attributed to a revolt * of. national feeling. Force can install any, regime, but it does not suffice to render it popular or even acceptable. It is not only by martyred and groaning peoples that Europe can be saved."

A message from Gothenburg, Sweden, says that the Luftwaffe near Bergen sank two Norwegian ship 3 which were attempting to escape to England.. One hundred persons on board were killed. Escapees are in^ creasing in number and several weliknown Norwegians have succeeded in reaching England

New York reports that the French Deputy Consul, M. Francois Charles Roux, has sent his resignation to Vichy and announced that he is joining General de Gaulle because Marshal Petain is advocating collaboration with Germany.
