FIRE INSURANCE

ARE RATES TOO HIGH?

"Will the Prime Minister have an investigation made as to whether the premiums charged by fire insurance companies in New Zealand are fair and reasonable?" asked Mr. D. W. Coleman (Government, Gisborne) in a notice of question in the House of Representatives yesterday. Mr. Coleman also asked whether, if it were found that the premiums charged were too high, the Prime Minister would take steps to have relief given to policy holders. Mr. Coleman said that, according to the report to Parliament of the Inspector of Fire Brigades, the premiums collected by fire insurance companies u> New Zealand last year amounted to £948,176 and losses paid by the companies totalled £228,929. He added that the premium income in Gisborne was £20,154 and the losses paid out £2158. - '
