POTATO MARKET
AUSTRALIAN STOCKS
NOW BEING DISTRIBUTED
CHEAPER THAN LOCAL PRODUCT
The first shipment of Australian potatoes for many years is now being distributed. The shipment consists of some 4055 sacks and is consigned to the Internal Marketing Division.
The potatoes, which arc in very good condition, are mainly for Army and other Government requirements; but the balance is being sold through the produce markets in the usual course, the price arranged being £12 10s per ton, sacks in ex store.
The price of £12 10s per ton includes freight, £1 13s, plus 124 per cent, per ton; wharfage, 5s a ton; duty, £1 per ton; also other incidental charges.
Prior to the report of the Government's intention to import potatoes from Australia prices for New Zealand potatoes were quoted in the Christchurch market at £14 per ton, free on board, for Dakotas, and £15 10s to £16 for Buttons; today Dakotas are being quoted at £11 10s, and Suttpns £12 15s, and about £2 additional to cover freight, wharfage, and other charges to put the potatoes into store in Wellington.
Wellington market quotations for potatoes yesterday were £14 to £16 per ton.
