APPEAL FOR HELP
THE HOMES OF COMPASSION
The Homes of Compassion are making a street-day appeal on Thursday, September 25, and it is hoped that this will receive the public's generous support, since the homes are almost completely dependent on the continual charity of the people, receiving very little from Social Security The work of the Sisters oi. Compassion is carried on for the poor absolutely free of charge, and thus depends on voluntary help from outside. Funds, too, are required to pay for the construction of a large babies' nursery now nearing completion at Island Bay, and built because of an imperative need for increased accommodation. It will
be seen that generous support of Thursday's street day. will greatly benefit the sisters' work.
' Stalls will be established in the streets and gifts of garments, novelties, cakes, jams, pickles, flowers, vegetables, etc., for these will be very welcome. They can be. left at the stalls on Thursday, or at the Home of Compassion, Buckle Street (telephone 50-801). A rally for stallholders, helpers, and friends will be held on Sunday afternoon, September 21, at 3 p.m., in the new nursery at the Home of Compassion, Island Bay. The hon; secretary for the appeal is J. McDermott, 76 Glen Road, Kelburn (telephone 27-109).
An appeal will be made in the Hutt Valley; in PeCone, on Friday, October 3. and in Lower Hutt on Friday, October 31. The secretaries are: For Petone, Mrs, Powell, 15 Elizabeth Street (telephone 63-715), and for Lower Hutt, Mrs. Guthrie, 26 Queen's Road (telephone 60-482).
