DUIGAN
Cabled advice has been received from Major-General Freyberg that Major Denis F. Duigan, M.C., .has donated £1000 to the Second N.Z.E.F. troops in the Middle East. Major Duigan, who is a brother of Major-General Sir John Duigan, the former Chief, of the General Staff, served in the last war with'distinction. On the outbreak of the present! war he was appointed Camp Commandant of the Second N.Z.E.F. Base Camp at Maadi, in Egypt, but owing to serious ill health he was later invalided to England, where . his home is. .' In making this announcement today the Minister of Defence (Mr. Jones) (said .that Major-General Freyberg had intimated that this generous gift was being divided between units of the Second N.Z.E.F. and the bases, the division being decided by the welfare committee and the Commanding. Officer. MINISTER'S MESSAGE. "A message of appreciation has been sent by Major-General Freyberg on behalf of all ranks of the Second N.Z.E.F. to Major Duigan," continued the Minister, "and I am sure that the people of New Zealand will endorse the contents of the following cablegram which I have sent to Major Duigan:—'Your gift of £1000 for the New Zealand soldiers in Egypt is most deeply appreciated by the Government and people of New Zealand. I am advised that the gift is being distributed among all units and I feel sure that your generosity will materially contribute to the welfare and comfort of the troops. The Prime Minister and all other members of the Government join me in' sending you the • grateful thanks of the" country.'" i
