RECORD SALVO
FIRED BY U.S. WARSHIP
LONDON, September 14,
The greatest salvo from one ship in American naval history was fired by the guns (including nine 16-inch guns firing shells weighing just under a ton) of the new 35,000-ton U.S. battleship North Carolina, during some recent trials. She discharged nearly 11J tons of metal in one collective blast. No one knew beforehand how the ship would react to a test of such extreme severity. She took on a slight list, but righted herself quickly. During the three-day trials only slight damage, usual to 'new ships, was done.
