FOUR BERLIN RAIDS
IN PAST EIGHT NIGHTS
OTHER R.A.F. TARGETS
(Rec. 11 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 8. It is learned that last night's attack was not only the heaviest yet launched against Berlin, but that it was carried out with success. Berlin has now been raided four times in the past eight nights, twice by the R.A.F. and twice by the Russian air force. The R.A.F. last night iAso raided the ship yards at Kiel, and the docks at Boulogne, and started fires in Boulogne which were seen from the English coast. R.A.F. night fighters were active over enemy air bases, from Holland to Brittany. An all-Polish crew of one machine started a big fire at an important aerodrome in Brittany. Seven fires, visible for 20 miles, were started at another French aerodrome. The raid caused an angry outburst by the Berlin >Press, which denounces it as "a loutish trick" and "a crime." The "Nachtausgabe" says the raid was one of the rottenest and most disgusting yet made on Berlin. These shameful acts will avenged; says the paper, and the German sword will strike with fearful sharpness until Britain is forced to her knees. All the afternoon papers publish at least a column dealing with the raid. They emphasise the exemplary discipline of the people and the care devoted to the victims. The German official news agency stated that 27 civilians were killed in the raid. It is also announced in Berlin that 3853 persons were killed in air raids on Germany to August 2. A. German- communique claims that strong formations of the Luftwaffe last night attacked military installations on the Tyne and Humber harbours. An Italian communique reports that waves of enemy aircraft raided Palermo last night, killing 16 civilians. It was also announced in Rome that the Russian air force bombed Bucharest three times last night.
