UNFILLED VACANCY
WATERFRONT COMMISSION
The question of filling the vacancy on the Waterfront Control Commission caused by the resignation of Captain McLeod was raised by Mr. Will Appleton at last night's meeting of the Wellington Harbour Board. He said he understood that the intention had been to have one representative each of the employers and the workers, and a chairman. Did the resignation of Captain McLeod mean that the employers haid no representative on the 'Commission? Nothing had been published about the position since Captain McLeod's resignation in March, and it was time the board knew something of what was proposed. Mr. J. O. Johnson said he understood that the shipping people had never agreed that Captain McLeod was their representative. He believed the Government had appointed Captain McLeod because of his knowledge of drawing stevedoring contracts. That was one reason, anyhow. Mr. Johnson said he did not know why the vacancyhad not been filled. The chairman (Mr. W. H. Price) said he thought the representations should come from the ship owners rather than from the board. Mr. T. R. Barrer. said he could not see why the board should not make the representations. The discussion then lapsed.
