TUDOR SINGERS

A programme of vocal music of particular interest was given by the Tudor Singers, conducted by " Mr. Temple White, at the Nimmo Hall last evening. The works included Granville Bantock's impressive woi'k "King Solomon," which Mr. White said he believed was given on this occasion for the first time in New Zealand. It began with an introduction for two pianos (played by Misses Jocelyn Walker and Shirley Craig) followed by the Tudor Singers—a small, but welltrained body of sopranos, contraltos, tenors, • and basses—and the graphic scriptural description of the exaltation of the King was read with clear enunciation and an acute sense of colour by the Rev. Lawrence North. The work closed with a choral hymn sung with precision and understanding. Other choral works included "Flora's Holiday," a cycle of old English melodies (Lane Wilson), in^vhich solos were taken by Gwenyth Greenwood, Edith Wiltshire, Chas. Williams, and Cecil Svensen, and madrigals by old English composers. "Love Waltz" (Brahms) and "Lullaby" (Elgar) were also sung, and were noteworthy for their clear enunciation and delicate nuances of light and shade. Miss Myra Sawyer (soprano) sang "Heart Worship" (Hoist), "O Men From the Fields" (Hughes), and "The Fairy Tree" (O'Brien). In addition she sang a delightful fairy song composed by Miss Cara Hall. Miss Sawyer sang each song with clear insight into its meaning, and was in excellent voice. The concert owed much of its success to the pianistes, Misses Walker and Craig, who not only took instrumental parts in the "King Solomon" work, but gave a sound reading of the first movement of Beethoven's pianoforte concerto in B flat major. The proceeds \vere for V.M.C.A. work among men of the Forces. Mr. White thanked Messrs. Nimmo for the use of the hall.
