THE NATION'S TASK
CALLED BY'GOD
The longer the war lasted, the more deeply we became aware of the issues at stake, said the Rev. L. A. North, addressing, the citizens' intercessory service in the Town Hall yesterday. A hideous tyranny had already spread its sinister shadow over the greater part of Europe, and its effects were being felt over practically the whole world. But for nearly two years our nation had been the great stumbling-block in the path of this tyranny. There should, therefore, be developed a spirit of elation, a spirit of exaltation, that we as a nation had been called upon to act as a barrier to this hideous tyranny. As a nation we had our faults and national sins, all too obvious to be glossed over, but in spite of our unworthiness and shortcomings we were being used by God for His purposes to overcome the evil. The present time was no time for argument or speculation: it was the time for resolution and action. We had to do the right as we saw it: no man could do more, arid no man should do less. We had to obey the voice of duty and conscience, remembering that, although the way might be hard and difficult and attended by suffering, the Resurrection followed the Cross. The final issue lay, not in our hands, but in God's. ' *
The second part of the intercessory service was conducted by the Wellington Chamber of Commerce. The Mayor read the Scriptures and Mr. C. Collins was at the organ.
