EASEMENT SOUGHT
STONE FRUIT REGULATIONS
GRADING AND PACKING, ETC.
The petition of C. E. Pope, of Christchurch, and forty-four others asking that the section of the New Zealandgrown Fruit Regulations, 1940, relating to the grading, sizing, packing, inspection, >nd sale of stone fruit be reyoked, has received a favourable hearing from the Agricultural and Pastoral Committee, which reported to the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon.
The report stated that the committee was of the opinion that the petition should be referred to the Government for most favourable consideration.
Mr. W. A. Bodkin (National, Central Otago) expressed the hope that the Government would give full effect tv t\:r re ommendation. Otago growers felt that less than half their crop could be harvested if the new regulations had to be followed.
Mr H. S. S. Kyle (National, Riccarton) declared that all the evidence before the committee proved the impossibility of fixing standard sizes for stone fruits.
Mr. T. H. McCombs (Government, Lyttelton). while not opposing the report, said that standards were desirable, and it was interesting to note that growers who came before the committee were grading their fruit, and put up the first-class in a first-class grade. The same committee also submitted its report on a petition from B. T. Turner, and 104 others, of Canterbury, seeking revision of the terms of the fruit purchase scheme as applied to Canterbury orchardists. There was no recommendation on this.
