SUPPORT URGED
AN ALTERNATIVE POSSIBLE
DUTY OF PUBLIC
Generous support for the New | Zealand Government's £10,000,000 War Loan was urged by the president of the Wellington Chamber of j Commerce (Mr. R. H. Nimmo) at a { meeting of the council of the cham- | ber last night. He described sup- j port of the loan as an obvious duty, and suggested that if the money was not forthcoming voluntarily it would be found' in another way. Mr. Nimmo said that when the prospectus for the loan was issued on August 1, he commended the* loan and urged the business community and the public to participate; firstly as a national duty and secondly because the terms, with due regard to present conditions were reasonable. "I anticipated that, in the circumstances, the loan would be generously supported," he continued. "Up to date several millions have been subscribed, but as the closing date is rapidly approaching I would again urge the commercial community and the public' generally to make their applications without delay. "If there is one thing more certain than anything else, it is that the money has to be found—if not found as a voluntary loan, it will be found in another way and, this being so, I suggest to all those in a position to subscribe, and not already having done so, that they consider the possible alternatives, which would be highly undesirable from every point of view. "The men in the field are doing their 'job, and they confidently look to us to do our obvious duty. Having re r gard to the amount of liquid money in the country, a loan such as this should definitely be oversubscribed."
