DR. A. NORMAN JONES

Dr. Alfred Norman Jones died suddenly at his home in Lower Hutt on Sunday. He was formerly one-of the most prominent dental surgeons in Wellington, but was compelled by ill health due to overwork, to retire, in 1934. He was the son. of Captain Frederick Jones, well known in Dunedin shipping circles, and for a time associated with his cousin. Sir James Mills.

Dr., Jones was born in Dunedin 63 years ago. and was educated at the Otago Boys' High School. Proceeding to Toronto University, he had a distinguished career, being a gold medallist and securing the degree of D.D.S Afterwards he continued his studies at other Canadian and U.S.A. universities and became proficient in oral surgery Returning to New Zealand, he built up a large practice in Wellington. He was a foundation member of the Wellington Savage Club and a vice-president of the Hutt Valley Kennel Club.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters, who have both had; distinguished university careers. Dr. Dorothy Norman Jones, M.A., M.Sc... M.B. (Cantab.), and D.P.H. (London), has been working in various London hospitals during the war, and last week Miss G wen da Norman . Jones, . 8.A., Dip.S.Sc, joined her sister to take up transport duties in the R.A.F. There are three brothers, Mr. F. J. Jones, of Lower Hutt. who retired from the position of Chief Engineer of the Railway Department some years ago. the Rev. Percival Jones. England, and Mr. Charles Jones. Auckland, and two sisters, Mrs. J. P, Dpnald and Mrs. William Jay, both living in England.
