"BUTTER SHOULD BE SENT"
. According to a letter he had just received from the Middle East by air mail, the only New, Zealand product that could be. purchased on the Egyptian market was beer/said Mr. H. G. Dickie (National, Patea) in the House of Representatives last night.
Mr. Dickie said he had been informed that the Australian Trade Commissioner in Egypt was pushing the sale of Australian products for all he was worth, and Australian commodities were readily obtainable there. He had previously mentioned the use in New Zealand canteens in Egypt of Australian edible margarine.
The Minister of Marketing (Mr. Barclay): They do not make margarine here. - •'■'■■
Mr. Dickie: Oh, yes they do. They make margarine far use by pastrycooks and the like. The manufacturer has tried to get ia licence for making edible margarine, but he cannot get1 it. Mr: Dickie added that lie did not 'think edible margarine should be made in New Zealand, but as there were transports travelling between New Zealand and the Middle East he thought the least that could be done would be to send New Zealand butter to Egypt for the troops.
