SOVIET COMMUNIQUE
NAZI ENCIRCLEMENT STORY
(Rec. 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, August 12. A Moscow communique states: "Our troops continued fighting during the night in the directions of Kakisalmi, Soltsy, Smolensk, and Uman. There were no major engagements in other regions." A supplementary communique says that combined operations by tanks, aeroplanes, artillery, and infantry routed a large German tank column in the direction of Iskorost. The Berlin correspondent of the Associated Press of Great Britain says that belated reports from the Eastern Front claim that large Soviet forces have been cut off and are tightly hemmed in in the region between Ochakov and Odessa and are trying to get away by ships. The Berlin news agency claims that German fighters patrolling the area [ around Kiev this morning shot down !27 enemy planes. The Bremen radio says that during Luftwaffe attacks against Ochakov on, August 11, three small ships were sunk land one damaged.
