MR. FRANK HOLDSWORTH

The death occurred yesterday of Mr. Frank Holdsworth, whose membership of the legal profession in Wellington extended over nearly fifty years. He was 69 years of age. Mr. Holdsworth was born in Wellington and was educated at Wellington College and at Wanganui College. There being no university in those days, he began his legal career, at the age of 19, in the office of the late Mr. W. H. Quick, and he was admitted as a solicitor in 1896. He began practice on his own account shortly afterwards. For a time he was Mayor of the borough of Onslow, which later was merged with the city, and in recent years he was a member of the Wellington Colleges Board of Governors. As

a Mason he was past master of the Otari Lodge for many years. A powerfully-built man, Mr. Holdsworth was a prominent cricketer in his younger days. He played first with the Rivals Club in junior cricket and later in the senior grade with the Midland Club. He was a forceful batsman, with a reputation for hard hitting, and one of his strokes broke the clock at the Basin Reserve.! He was popularly known as "Sixer/ 1 Holdsworth. Later he developed into a bowler of ability. He represented Wellington on the cricket field, playing for them against an overseas team early.-in. the: present cen-tury. . Mr. Holds worth ,is survived by his widow', who .was formerly. Miss Winnie West, daughter of the Rev. Dr. West, of the Congregational. Church, There are two daughters, Mrs. J. Cattanach and Miss K. .Holdsworth, both of .Wellington, and one son, Mr. F. Holdsworth, who has been a resident of Melbourne, f6r. some time. The only other son, Flying Officer Cedric Holdsworth, was. killed during air operations in Syria in June.

The late Sir Charles Holdsworth, managing director of the Union Steam Ship Company, who died some years ago, was a brother of Mr. Frank Holdsworth, and surviving brothers are Messrs. L. Holdsworth (Wellington), S. Holdsworth (Masterton), and J. G. Holdsworth (Invercargill). Mr. W. G. Holdsworth, of Wellington, is a stepbrother.
