MADE BIG RAID ON SICILY
(Rec. 1.30 p.m.) RUGBY, August 4,
Details of the performance and structure of the Bristol Beaufighter, one of Britain's latest and most formidable long-range day and night fighters, have been released.
Besides the achievement of considerable success as night fighters during the early part of this year, it was a squadron of Beaufighters which, among other successful operations, carried out the attack on the aerodromes in Sicily on July 6, when between 30 and 40 enemy aircraft were destroyed on the ground and many others were damaged. The Bristol Beaufighter is an allmetal mid-wing monoplane fitted with two Bristol Hercules engines. It has accommodation for a crdw of two—a pilot and an observer. Its nominal top speed is over 330 m p:h. at 14,000 feet, and its nominal range is 1500 miles. It is armed with four cannon in the fuselage and six machine-guns in the wings.—B.O.W.
