WAR ON THE BORDER

JAPAN AND RUSSIA

"IMPOSSIBLE AT PRESENT"

(Rec. 10 a.m.)

SHANGHAI, August 4. The Japanese military spokesman, Major-General T. Akiyama, said that the reported Soviet-Japanese border clash was "impossible under the present circumstances," especially in view of the fact that negotiations for the demarcation of the border are at present proceeding smoothly.

Major-General Akiyama was referring to persistent reports that Japanese and Russian forces have engaged in large-scale hostilities on the Amur River during the weekend. The Japanese were reported to have suffered 1500 casualties.
