R.A.F. RAID ON SICILY
SMASHING BLOWS
34 ENEMY PLANES DESTROYED
NO BRITISH LOSS
LONDON, July 29
The Royal Air Force yesterday gave some smashing: blows to the Italian air force in Sicily, and altogether 34 enemy aircraft were destroyed. Many other planes were damaged, and a number of casualties were inflicted on aerodrome personnel.
The operations were carried out without loss to the British aircraft.
The attacks were concentrated on the coastal districts of Sicily. At Syracuse the toll of destruction was seven flying-boats, at Catania eleven enemy planes, at Marsala seven, and at Borizzo, the landing ground near Trapani, on the west coast of Sicily, nine bombers. At all these places many other enemy aircraft were badly damaged.
The story of this highly successful raid is given in today's Royal Air Force communique from the Middle East.
It is also reported that Royal Air Force bombers attacked a loaded
schooner in the central Mediterranean yesterday and left her sinking. Another raid is also believed to have been carried out on Benghazi by ( heavy bombers. Bombs dropped from a. low height caused many fires and explosions. From these operations all the aircraft returned safely. ;
