PRODUCE FOR BRITAIN

AUSTRALIA AND N,Z.

NEGOTIATIONS ABOUT QUANTITIES

CANBERRA, July 10,

The Minister of Commerce, Sir Earle Page, said he expected that Australian butter purchased by Britain for the 1941-42 season would be about 60 per cent, of the amount taken last year.

Britain, he said, had named the total she was prepared to buy from both Australia and New Zealand, and negotiations were now proceeding between these two Governments as to how the quantity should be allocated. It was expected that the f.o.b. contract prices for butter would be the same as for last year. Britain would purchase 40,000 tons of cheese for 1941-42— double the quantity of last year. The prices had yet to be confirmed, but he believed they would be substantially above the contract prices last year.
