LONDON, July 8. A Reuter message from Jerusalem reports that Empire troops in the coastal sector of Syria are now astride of a river a mile north of the River Damour, and forces are moving round to the east of Damour village in an attempt to encircle the Vichy strong- j hold. A Jerusalem message also reports progress by Allied forces advancing on Beirut from Damascus. In Central Syria.. Horns is now threatened by an Allied force which is only 15 miles away, having advanced 65 miles from Palmyra. Indian troops have worked their way 80 miles up the Euphrates from Deir, and are now half-way to Aleppo.

In the extreme north-east of Syria Indian • troops are advancing on a line roughly parallel with the. Istanbul-Aleppo-Bagdad railway.
