CHESS

N.Z. ASSOCIATION

The forty-second' annual general meeting of the New Zealand Chess Association was held on June 25. ■ Mr. A. T. Craven (vice-president) occupied the chair. \

The annual report states that 20 clubs are now affiliated. Telegraphic matches for the Bledisloe and Blackburne Cups were not* played last year. The fiftieth congress was held in Timaru during the Christmas holidays, when Dr. P, Allerhand and R. G. Wade, both, of Wellington, tied for "the New Zealand championship, the former winning the play-off. Dr. E. W.,Bennett (Dunedin) and R. O. Scott (Wanganui) tied and divided the third and fourth prizes. By winning the major open tourney Mr; J. L. Hardy (Wellington) has earned the right to compete in .the next championship tourney. The second, third, and fourth prizes were won by Messrs. N. S. Traves (Timaru) :, J. D. Steele- (Wellington), and E..C. Wallace (Timaru) respectively, while Messrs. Traves and Steele annexed special prizes. ■ Reference .is made to Mr. Arthur Cant, who edited the chess column in the ''Weekly Press" for nearly 43 years, and who retired; in December last after serving the Press Company for 61 years. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, his. Excellency Sir Cyril Newall; president,; H. Oakley Browne (Auckland); vice-presidents, A. W. R. Saxby (Hamilton), L. Meredith (Gisborne), A. J. Ratliff (Wanganui), P. Kummer (Masterton), A. T. Craven (Wellington), C'-Nl Wilkinson (Nelson), J. T. O. Stephens {Timaru), E. A. Le Petit (Invercargill), and one nominee from each of the following clubs., viz., Auckland, Canterbury, Oamaru, and Otago. The executive officers were all re-elected.

The application of the Auckland Club to have the next congress held in that centre was granted. The New Zealand Correspondence Chess Association was formally admitted to membership. .

New Zealand's strongest players are invited to take part in the proposed 100-a-side correspondence match against Australia.

The association has been granted a permit to import some bakelite chessmen from Australia for sale to clubs.
