CAUGHT IN A TRAP
ITALIANS' HEAVY LOSSES
LONDON, May 30,
Italian forces in the Jimma area are about 25,000 strong. Fifty miles north of Gondar the Italians have evacuated an important, town, and in this vicinity about 17,000 Italians are being steadily surrounded. An agency dispatch from Nairobi gives details of the campaign in the lakes district. The fighting there is described as fierce. The Italians were caught between two forces—the King's African Rifles and Gold Coast forces assisted by patriot troops.
Of all the enemy forces in this area only about 1000 men of the 24th Division are unaccounted for. They have left the road and may be endeavouring to go round Lake Marguerita. An area of 10,000 square miles has now been cleared of enemy forces. Our forces advancing from the south have captured more than 7000 prisoners, and the enemy was completely annihilated.
In the Sollum area patrol activity continues. The Germans have made no attempt to advance beyond Hellfire Pass.
