BLOOD AND TEARS

BUT WHERE THE SWEAT?

A WARNING FOR ALL

Mr. Churchill on the outbreak of war offered us nothing but sweat and blood and tears to secure victory. The blood and tears are now flowing, but we in this country have to ask ourselves what about the sweat?

This statement was made by Mr. S. Blackley, the retiring chairman of the Hutt County Council, when reviewing the year's work at yesterday's annual meeting. "In'times such- as they were passing through at present, he continued, with the whole British Empire in arms against the tyranny which was seeking to destroy the democracies, co-opera-tion between all members of the community was most necessary. Their whole-hearted efforts were called for in the fight the Empire and Allies were making with the support of the United States of America.

"The Acting Prime Minister said a few days ago that he believed not more than 5 per cent, of the people of New Zsaland realised how serious the war situation is," said Mr. Blackley. "If this is the case after one and a half years of the most merciless war the world has ever known, it is time those L. positions of responsibility summoned the people to their senses before it is too late. Marshal Petain. when explaining the defeat of France, said, 'The people demanded more than they had given and wanted to spare themselves effort, and today misfortune has come.' Let everyone take the warning before it is too late."
