SMALLER PAPERS

TO START NEXT MONDAY

LESS ADVERTISING SPACE

RATIONING PLAN

A further reduction in the sizes of all newspapers in New Zealand will be brought into operation on June 2. Newsprint is now available only from Canada, and in order to save dollar exchange the newspaper proprietors have agreed, at the request of the Government, to a strict regulation of paper consumption. This "cut," the third in twelve months, is being made to conserve the limited supplies of paper—represented by depleted stocks in New Zealand and relatively small importations this year. The rationing plan formulated by the Newspaper Proprietors' Association, accepted by all its members, and approved by the Government, fixes for each newspaper the maximum number of pages to be published weekly and the maximum quantity of newsprint that may be used. The plan is based upon supervision of consumption and regulation of imports by each newspaper, administered by the association. GOVERNMENT'S APPROVAL. The policy laid down by the Newspaper Proprietors' Association—again with the approval of the Government —is that the present reduction should be made with the least possible effect jupon the quality and the variety of i the news services. This implies a strict ! regulation of the space available for advertising, and after a thorough in|vestigation of the position, the Price | Tribunal authorised an increase in i advertising rates that will partly meet the loss of revenue caused by the reduction in volume of advertising. During' recent months, the weekly issues of the "Evening Post" have been from 82 to 90 pages. As from June 2, the total will be rigidly restricted to 75 pages. The reduction will be effected almost entirely by regulating the quantity of advertising. As the total space available for advertisements in each issue will be strictly limited, all orders for advertisements will be accepted subject to space being available.

The increase of 25 per cent, on "Evening Post" advertising rates will take effect as from Monday next, June 2.
