SLAVERY'S EXPLOSIVE FORCES

Does every system of human slavery contain the seeds of its own destruction? Does there exist, in such a slavery system, a latent explosive force that can destroy it utterly? This question is aroused by two almost parallel passages in the statements of President Roosevelt and Mr. Anthony Eden. Yesterday the President was quoted 'in these columns as saying that Hitler's "cruel forces of occupation will be unable to keep their heel on millions" of oppressed Europeans if Hitler is prevented from bringing his land-war to a close with a sea victory. In other words, if his success falls short of sea-command, then. .Hitler's "continuing land-war" can be- pursued only at. the cost of generating among the peoples under his heel such opposition that in the end the- Nazi structure "will break into little pieces." Following the same line of argument, the British Foreign Secretary, Mr. Eden, declares:

We cannot now foresee when the end will come, but it is in the nature of a machine so rigid as the German machine to break suddenly and with little warning.

Hitler's master race theory means "a fixed and deliberate policy of subjugation —the creation of slaves. . The Nazis are creating a flood of hate unparalleled in force and volume, and when the dam bursts it will sweep Hitler and his gang away. Every German in his heart must know and fear this." If the Germans do not fear this, they must rate nonGerman human intelligence as something below animal intelligence. To do that is to subject the master race theory to a dangerous strain. Its survival would be in conflict with the whole ytrend of civilised history.
