LOWER HUTT COUNCIL
INSTALLATION CEREMONY
The installation ceremony of the Mayor and councillors of Lower Hutt City, which took place on Wednesday night, was well attended. The Mayor, Mr. J. W. Andrews, briefly welcomed the guests. He then took the oath of office, and was invested with the Mayoral chain.
Councillors H. S. Dudding and H. F. Muir expressed the congratulations of the councillors on Mr. Andrews's reelection. Councillor Dudding referred to the capable manner in which Mr. Andrews had fulfilled his office, and also expressed the appreciation of councillors of the planner in which Mrs. Andrews had carried out the duties of Mayoress. The next three years would probably be the most eventful in the history of the Empire, and this would be reflected in the affairs of country and city. He expressed the loyal support of councillors.
In his reply, Mr. Andrews remarked that the public was an exacting critic. There were many problems to be faced, but the greatest one was to assist the war effort by every means possible. Councillor J. Mitchell was elected Deputy Mayor.
The following committees were elected: —Finance, the whole council in committee; works, Councillors W. Gregory (chair), F. Campbell, H. S. Dudding, and H. F. Muir; reserves, Councillors J. Mitchell (chair), F. S. Hewer, and A. Marshall; bylaws. Councillors E. P. Hay (chair), G. L. Giesen, and Dudding; joint committee with Petone, the Mayor, Councillors Gregory, and Mitchell; Hutt Park committee representatives, Councillors Campbell and Muir and Mr. W. H. Wilson; rates appeal, the Mayor and Councillors Gregory and Marshall; tenders and accounts. Councillors Marshall and Mitchell; staff, the Mayor, Councillors Gregory, Hay, and Mitchell.
Representatives were elected as follows: —Taita Cemetery Board, Councillors Giesen and Mitchell; High School feoard of Governors, Mr. D. A. Ewen; Wellington Free Ambulance, Counciltor Hay; tennis club executive, Councillor Marshall.
