KING'S BIRTHDAY

OBSERVANCE AS HOLIDAY

The position regarding the closing of shops and the observance of the King's .Birthday was explained today by Mr. W. J. Mountjoy, secretary of the Wellington Employers' Federation. Mr. Mountjoy stated that all shops must be closed on Monday next. June 2, and assistants must; be given a holiday, except that -confectioners, fruiterers, dairies, and cake shops may be open as though Monday were an ordinary day. Tearooms and restaurants may be kept open, but workers employed therein must be paid extra rates.

Females and boys under. 16 years of age employed in factories are not permitted by the Factories Act to work, but male workers may be employed in factories that day on payment of the extra rates prescribed by the Factories Act or the respective awards.

Building trade awards do not require the observance of Monday as a holiday. Under the motor- and horsedrivers' award, Monday is a holiday and workers employed at driving are required to be paid at overtime rates. Under the wool and grain stores and storemen and 'packers' award workers must be given a holiday or be paid overtime rates.
