WOOLLEN YARNS

N.Z. PRODUCTION

INCREASE AIMED AT

PIECE GOODS AND BLANKETS

The Minister of Supply (Mr.

Sullivan) stated today that ar-

rangements had been in train for

some time with a view to increas-

ing production of woollen yarns

within the Dominion, as well as

woollen piece goods v and blankets,

The Minister's statement was made in reply to a cablegram from Australia yesterday announcing that in future woollen yarns would not be available for civilian needs in the Commonwealth and that henceforth every blanket manufactured there would be taken by the 'Defence Department.

"New Zealand has never been selfsupporting in supplies of woollen yarns, and lately we have been drawing some supplies from Australia," said Mr. Sullivan. "The position outlined in the cable from Australia is known to the Government, and arrangements have been in train for some time designed to increase .not only our domestic production of yarns, but also of woollen piece goods and blankets, in order to minimise any shortage that may develop. Future action by the Government will depend on what success is attained in the effort to increase production.

GOODS FOR ARMED FORCES

"The woollen mills are today supplying large quantities of piece goods, underwear, socks, and blankets for our armed forces, and, in addition to the maintenance of our most essential civil needs, they are endeavouring to provide a small quota of materials for the needs of the Imperial and Allied Forces."
