REVOLT IN IRAK

SIGNS OF CRUMBLING

REGENT GAINS SUPPORT

LONDON VIEWPOINT

LONDON, May 26. Today's news from Irak gives more indication that Rashid Ali's rebellion is crumbling. The reports

that some of the usurper's Minis-

ters have already fled the country are believed in London to show that hopes of any real German as-

sistance are vanishing.

The lawful Regent of the country, Amir Abdul Illah, has issued a second proclamation to his people calling on them to rally to his banner. Many Irakis are already reported to have joined him. One message says that the general who negotiated the treaty of alliance with Great Britain is on his way back to Irak from Istanbul.

Today's Cairo communique says that all is quiet at Falluja and Basra. An earlier report from Ankara said that British motorised units are operating east of the Euphrates, having presumably crossed the river at Falluja. It is also learnt ?that the R.A.F. have bombed Iraki rebels near Ramadi, a

crossing place on the Euphrates 20

miles north-west of Habbania

It is learnt in London that French consular officers in Palestine have been requested to leave by Wednesday next. It is understood that this step has been undertaken by the British authorities as the result of a French request that British consular officers in Syria should leave their posts on or before that day.
