PATRIOTIC FUNDS

WELLINGTON COMMITTEE

The gift house in Raroa Road, Lower Hutt, which is to be raffled for patriotic purposes, will be handed over to the Wellington Provincial Patriotic Council on Saturday morning, according to advice received by the Wellington Metropolitan Patriotic Committee yesterday. Mr. W. Jones, chairman of the building trade committee, will tormally hand the house over.

A letter was received from the officer commanding H.M. hospital ship Somersetshire, Lieutenant-Colonel J. Walker Hirst, expressing thanks for all the kindnesses shown to the crew and hospital staff of all ranks during their stay in Wellington. The sports and socir 1 club of another ship wrote expressing its thanks for ( the supply of a set ■)f football gear and forwarding a donadon of £2 2s to the patriotic funds.

The secretary, the Hon. Vincent Ward, M.L.C., reported that on Saturday last, accompanied by the officer hi command of guard positions in the Wellington area, Major Vance, the pominion president of the Returned Soldiers' Association, the Hon. W. Perry, M.L.C., and Mr. E. C. Hale, he had visited the guard posts and discussed the question of comforts for the men,

Mr. Ward also reported that 138 pictures by New Zealand artists, valued at £1250, had been handed over to the committee and were on display in the lounge of Kirkcaldie and Stains. They were on sale and a number were being raffled.

The committee expressed its thanks to the St. James and King's Theatres for the screenings of the film "One Hundred Crowded Years," which raised £250.

The chairman of the Victory Queen Carnival Committee, Mr. J. AnnandSmith, was welcomed on taking his seat on the committee.

It was decided to draw the attention of the three Service authorities to the accommodation available for personnel on leave at the Combined Services Hostel in Sydney Street.
