NAVY'S EFFORTS
CLOSE ACTION
AIR TORPEDO SCORES
A HIT
LONDON, May 25
Vessels of the Royal Navy are now trying to bring the enemy force, including the Bismarck, to action in the North Atlantic.
A communique issued a short time ago by the Admiralty stated that after the engagement in which the battle-cruiser Hood was lost, the enemy forces made every effort to shake off their pursuers. Later in the evening an attack by naval aircraft resulted in at least one torpedo-hit on the enemy. Operations are still proceeding, in the hope of bringing the enemy forces to close action.
This is the first news since last night's communique announcing the loss of the Hood.
Messages from the United States say that the loss of the Hood has served to underline the nearness of the war to the shores of the United States. In some quarters in Washington it is thought it demonstrates the necessity for immediate and important decisions in United States naval policy, since German naval forces have penetrated the zone in which United Stales ships are presumably patrolling.
