BIG FIGURE PAID

BATTLE SONG AT 3600GNS.

(P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, May 22. The feature of the Gladstone Park | dispersal sale at Orari today was the competition for the young English sire, Battle Song, whose price, 3600 guineas, was 300 guineas more than that secured for the champion sire, Beau Pere, at the Westmere Stud dispersal sale in 1937. Beau Pere, unfortunately for New Zealand bloodstock, was sold to go to Australia, but Battle Song is to remain in the Dominion and will be quartered at Mr. K. Austin's stud at Kaiapoi. There were several North Island visitors at the sale, the top-priced mare, Molten, dam of Night Eruption, going to Mr. J. A. Mitchell, Longburn. Mr. J. Nash, Whangarei, secured Battle Flag, dam of Slayer and Flagman, for 105 guineas, and also Vennachar, dam of Palfrey, for 240 guineas. Mr. E. D. Williams, Te Awamutu, bought an. unnamed filly by Lord Warden from Palestrina, dam of The Cardinal, for 325 guineas, and Mr. J. G. Alexander, Maxwell, owner of Coronach, secured Ma Mie, by Martian from a sister to Songbird, for 60 guineas. Satisfy, dam of Stolen March, was purchased by the auctioneers as agent, and will also probably go to the Auckland district. In all 16 lots were offered and the total realisation was 5885 guineas.
