HUTT VALLEY W.I. RECORD
WAR WORK
Mrs. Rothnie (president Taita W. 1.) and Mrs. Comb (Stokes Valley W. 1.) welcomed the president and executive, and also delegates from the various institutes to the annual council meeting of the Hutt Valley Federation of (Women's Institutes, which was held in Wesley Hall, Lower Hutt, recently. The large gathering was presided over by Mrs. Bennett (federation president), who welcomed Miss Kane (Dominion president), Mrs. Lynott (president. South Wellington Federation), Mrs. Hume, Mrs. Barnicott, Mrs. Andrews (Mayoress), and visitors from other organisations.
The annual report revealed that much war work had been accomplished by all the institutes in the federation. Supplies include 570 garments (Lady Galway Patriotic Guild), 123 articles (Red Cross), 622 articles of soldiers' knit wear, 222 soldiers' parcels, 48 tins biscuits and shortbread. 66 tins sweets, 40 cushions (Church of England hut), and £525 raised for patriotic funds. Clothing had also been provided for the City Mission, and the Upper Hutt group had sewn on patches and helped with canteen work.
Miss Kane congratulated the federation on the splendid report. As next year will record the twenty-first birthday of the women's institute in New Zealand, it was suggested that a conference should be held, and institutes should open a conference fund to enable their institutes to be represented. Miss Nelle Scanlan gave an address and Miss Kane presented a "good service badge" to Miss Wilson (Taita Institute) for her splendid- work.
