ST. JUDE'S CHURCH

VICAR INDUCTED

CONSECRATION TOMORROW

His Lordship the Bishop of Wellington, the Rt. Rev. H. St. Barbe Holland, will consecrate the church of St. Jude the Apostle (Lyall Bay) at a special service, beginning at 11 a.m. tomorrow. Rogation Sunday. The consecration marks the climax of eighteen years' hard endeavour by parishioners of the district.

The church itself is the most recent of three buildings in which services have been conducted since a time previous to 1910. In 1910 the present hall was built and the services, which hitherto had been held in a concrete building which now forms a lean-to to a house on Queen's Drive, were held in it- In 1923, a year after the late Rev. A. T. B. Page became vicar of the parochial district of Miramar, Seatoun, and Lyall Bay, plans were well afoot for the building of St. Jude's Church. Indeed, it was due largely to the energy and enthusiasm of the late Mr. Page that the church was built at a cost of £2257. The foun-dation-stone was laid by the Rt. Rev. T. H. Sprott, former Bishop of Wellington, on September 8. 1923. and the church's dedication took place on March 1, 1924. In 1933 Lyall Bay was transferred from the parochial district of Miramar-Seatoun and attached to that of Berhampore, where it remained until last April 1 when it was constituted a parochial district of its own, having its own full-time vicar, the Rev. A. F. R. Parr, formerly of All Saints. Wanganui East.

A large congregation attended the church when Bishop Holland conducted the service of institution, after which the ivicar-elect, accompanied by his churchwardens, was inducted by the Yen. Archdeacon W. Bullock. After the induction the vicar was conducted to his Prayer Desk by the Bishop where he assumed his office.

The. Bishop preached an inspiring sermon in which the relationship bei tween the vicar and his people was stressed. His Lordship said that much had been accomplished in the past and he looked forward to still greater progress. After the final hymn the Bishop pronounced the Blessing. A parishioners' welcome was extended to the vicar and Mrs. Parr at a social held in the Parish Hall after the service in church.
