ANTI-WAR MOTION
CARPENTERS TAKE
ACTION
The special meeting called* for last night by the Wellington Carpenters' and Joiners' Union for the purpose of dissociating itself from an anti-war resolution carried at n meeting of the unior. in April at which only ten members were present was one of the largest ever held, by the union. The proceedings were not open to the Press, but it is understood that there was a very, strong predominance in favour of prosecuting the war effort and that the purpose of the meeting was achieved by 232 votes to 95, with 1 informal .vote.
After having rescinded .the anti-war resolution, the meeting passed a resolution, which was carried by 153 votes to 96, that the mover and seconder of the anti-war motion at the Federation of Labour conference in April, Messrs. W. McAra and W. A. Jamieson, and the executive member responsible for the motion at the union meeting on March 25. Mr. L. Buxton, be removed from office for the duration of war.
The appointment of organiser was conferred upon Mr. McAra by the Wellington District Council of. the Carpenters' and, Joiners' Association, and a recommendation to that body for his removal from that position was being considered when Mr. McAra said that this would not be necessary, as he would accept decision of the meeting as conclusive.
