CENSORSHIP DELAYS
AUSTRALIAN ARRANGEMENT:
(Rec. 8 a.m.) CANBERRA, May ,8. An announcement was made by the Minister of Information, Senator Foil,, tonight that Press cable messages sent from Britain to Australian newspapers will-no longer be subjected to censorship' in Australia provided they have already been censored by a United Kingdom dispatch station Senator Foil pointed out that Mr. Menzies had arranged for this departure, which would be appreciated, by newspaper, staffs, who would be given the same power of voluntary censorship as they were exercising over Australian news. .It was.an extension of the "honour" system which would be applied to all incoming messages, both cable and wireless.
Senator Foil emphasised that cable - delays would thus be reduced to , a . minimum, but said that special articles from oversea correspondents would; require to be carefully watched. It might be necessary to seek the advice, of local censors, the responsibility, "for which would rest upon the editoria" staffs.—lT.P. A. ■■•'■■."..■■ ■-■■ :'• ■ '■■'■ ' ' ■'...■
