SEVEN TEARS AFTER
RIOTOUS'S DOUBLE
UNIQUE STEEPLES FEAT
(0.C.) HAWERA, May 8. Something unique in racing history was recorded on the opening day of the Egmont Racing Club's Winter Meeting today. Riotous not only won the Egmont Steeplechase for the second occasion, but/ the interval between his two wins was, seven years. He scored under 10.7, as a five-year-old in 1934, and to- . day he succeeded under 10.2. One cannot recall any such .double victory in the long story of the Turf. Not only this, but another veteran in Friesland staged a comeback to win the Mcßae Cup. i , The weather was fine, arid the track was easy. However, the increase in betting shown at recent meetings was not maintained, the investments receding from: £18,172 last year to £16.481 10s. It may be; observed in passing that the /Egmptit: Club: was the first to. suffer*; severely in its turnovers when totalisator figures began to show a definite decline about a decade ago. FAVOURITELOSES RIDER. The favourites for the Egmont Steeplechase, were Riotous's stablemates. Bridegroom and Dozie Boy, with Riotous at good, double-figure odds. Bridegroom would have been very hard to beat if he had: not lost, his rider two fences from -home, .where.Chat was also /eliminated. Riotous was 'always one of the vanguard, led by High Peer for a round. He was jumping faultlessly and assumed charge for the last circuit. Then Bridegroom and Chat joined him, arid when they blundered he was left secure. Ruling Star came on for a moderate second, and Dozie Boy. finishing fast,: cut Aussie Ra out of third-on the post. Aussie Ra's rider, A. E. Lord, was fined £5 for careless riding. POPULAR SUCCESS. The veteran Friesland scored a popular wins when he finished with a rattle to wear down the pacemakers over the final furlong of the Mcßae Cup Handicap. Last Acre, .Gay Fox, and Authoress, then singled themselves out for. the closing battle, but just when Last Acre: looked like going on to victory Friesland came with a rush t& get: up to- gain a narrow verdict, with Authoress shading Gay Fox for the minor money.' Next to finish Were Aurora's Star,; Alexcelia, Boden Park, Piastre, and Sir Crusoe. The Trentham-trained Circular Note was responsible for a sound performance in winning the Hawera Handi-; cap. He was a fair way back in the middle of the afield in the early stages but when once,hi line he finished very "resolutely to score comfortably ■;• by a length and a half from SurveyorGeneralj who had issued a strong challenge on the rails inside the final furlong. Veldette showed plenty of speed but was weakening at the end and just held off Night Eruption. Endorsement and Grandora both, faded out of the battle.,'- .:■'■■ ■•-.•■■■•-.■■ .:-.■.': .■ ;■ ' •■■.; ■■ An inquiry into the handling of Minority was opened and adjourned till Saturday. MATAROA AGAIN. The Tongahoe Hurdles proved a good thing for Mataroa, who trailed the leaders, until the three furlongs, and then moved up to go on for a decisive victory from .Eupatrid, who did not assist his chances by nearly falling three fences from home. Rollicker weakened into third, and Segra was a useful fourth. The favourite, Parekura, was a big disappointment. - Battle Gain led throughout in the Telegraph Handicap, and he was simply kept/going over last bit to score comfortably, by a length from Ringlirig and Tavoy, both, of whom had been
well up all the way. Ocean Breeze made a promising showing for fourth, and then came Valiant Lady and TauUru.
Sunny Knight scored his third win |on end when he completely outclassed the field for the Hack Scurry, and he was not extended to win by five lengths from Salvation and Parlato. Next to finish were Kriemhild, Verulam, and Squeers, the first-named making up a lot of ground over the last bit. Never further back than second at any stage, Le Marquis was ridden out to take the Tawhiti Handicap by' a length from Gitana Lass, who had made most of the pace. Phyto was running on for third, ahead of Miss Clipper and Israel, the nast-named coming home well. RESULTS IN DETAIL. Tongahoe Hurdles Handicap, £175; iy> miles. —2-1 Mataroa, 11.0 (A. E.
