FUN ON TRANSPORT

NOVEL *'BEAUTY CONTEST"

A. report received recently by the National Patriotic Fund Board from its overseas commissioner, LieutenantColonel F. Waite, gives an idea of the M;eps taken to relieve the monotony of the voyage for the New Zealand troops when they we^e transferred from the United Kingdom to the Middle East. A boxing tournament was held, various other competitions, and at a port of call cricket matches, tennis, bowls, and golf were arranged, and were taken advantage of by a large number of the contingent. Entertainment was provided each evening and. there were lectures and travel talks each week, as well as general knowledge competitions. Colonel Waite makes special mention ,of an unusual beauty contest which was promoted aboard the ship in which he travelled. The objects of this notable contest were to determine the hairiest chest, the best suntan, the heaviest and lightest soldiers, the tallest and shortest, the best tattoed, the toughest-looking, the. largest girth ! measurement, and the best fancy dress. Colonel Waite does not give the names of those who were awarded th£ prizps for these distinctions, but say? that a, good afternoon's fun was had, which' was all the more appropriate as they crossed the "line" that night.
