BOBBY CALVES
NEED FOR COLLECTION
YELLS FOR CHEESE INDUSTRY
(0.C.) ,PALMERSTON N., This' Day
A comprehensive outline of the position of the bobby calf industry was given by the Minister of Marketing (Mr. Barclay) yesterday, when he met representatives of the pools operating in the Taranaki, Manawatu, Wairarapa, Hawke's Bay, and East Coast areas. He explained that it was essential in the farmers' own interests for the collections of calves to continue, veils being essential to the further expansion of the chee&e industry, which was a necessity. ■ „ The Minister pointed out also that bobby calf.meat was not required by the United Kingdom, and further that the United Kindom had asked that the meat be not canned. Other types of canned meat were specified, but not that from the bobby calf industry. It:was necessary' that some scheme be evolved which would ensure that collections of calves would be made in sufficient numbers to meet the needs of the greatly-expanded cheese industry, and the, Minister invited the cooperation of the delegates to the conference in finding a solution which would impose, the least hardship while attaining the desired end. The Minister then withdrew and the conference discussed the matter, bringing forward a recommendation, the terms of which .were, not released for publication, but which, it was explained, was on the same lines as one made at a similar meeting in Auckland.
Arrangements were made by the conference to. elect an executive committee which will maintain contact With the Minister and which will be empowered to enter into further* negotiations should these be required.
It was explained that representatives of the South Island pools would be invited to a conference in Wellington before arrangements with the .ih-'dustry-'are brought to finality.,
