CHEMISTS WANTED

ESSENTIAL INDUSTRY

OPENING FOR WOMEN GRADUATES

"The women of this country are anxious to do something for the war effort," said the chairman of the Armed Forces Appeal Board (Mr. W. F. Stilwell, S.M.) today, when hearing an appeal for exemption from military service for an analytical chemist. "I am quite*, sure.that young women who have graduated as Bachelors of Science, if approached in the right way, would be prepared to step into industry for the period of the war at least." The representative of the company ■jd^ed the appeal said, in reply to Mr. Stilwell, that attempts had not been made to fill chemists' positions with women graduates. To secure men was practically impossible. Mi*. Stilwell said that with the training graduates had received they should be able to take their place in commerce and employers should consider releasing young men by employing women. As men were called up for the forces the position would become increasingly difficult if employers did not make provision for substitutes. The appeal before the board was adjourned sine die in the national interest, it being pointed out that the employers would have to release the chemist if the Crown wanted his services.
