BRITAIN'S MILK
NO IMMEDIATE SHORTAGE

Though milk consumption in Britain in the past year has risen by nearly 20 per cent, above the pre-war figure, there is no likelihood of any shortage in the next six months, the Minister of Food, Lord Woolton, said today. But, he added, there was something approaching a certainty that at that rate there would be a shortage next winter.
Lord Woolton was explaining why the Government preferred to let dairymen distribute one-seventh less milk in the light of their knowledge of their customers' requirements rather than introduce uniform rationing, which, he said, would give each person in the country about two-fifths of a pint rfiaily. The restriction during summer would allow of a surplus for the manufacture of cheese and for making condensed milk for winter use.—B.O.-W.
