SEIZED FAVOURITE'S TAIL

The Great Eastern Steeplechase at Onkaparinga (South Australia) oh Easter Monday had a sensational sequel. Acting on a statement made to them by a policeman who was at the back of the course, the stewards disqualified X; G. Parris, the rider of Collegian, for six months for improper practice, in that he had hung on- to the tail of the favourite, Dark David, for about 50 yards during the last round.

L. Meenan, the rider of Dark David, stated that he was not aware of the happening, but thought that his mount was feeling his weight at the time. It was at the next fence, after his tail had been released, that Dark David made a very poor jump. This year's winner of the big steeplechase was National Debt, a hardy campaigner who was making his third at-' tempt to win the event. Two years ago he finished fourth, and last year he was third. At his third essay he led the field home with lengths to spare, and ran the 3£ miles in time only a quarter of a second outside, the record. Bred by Mr. F. J. Cleggett, of Langhorne's Creek, he is by the Adelaide Goodwood and City Handicaps winner Trillion (a son of The Welkin) from an unnamed Lord Alwyne ~iare.
