OBITUARY

/ LADY CLIFFORD. *

Her many friends throughout the Dominion learned with deep regret of the death on Tuesday of Lady Clifford, at her home in Christchurch. Lady Clifford whad been in failing health for many months. Lady Clifford, who was a daughter of the, Rev. James Dennis, vicar of Bury St. Edmonds, England, was married to Sir George Clifford, second' baronet, in 1892, and lived for many years at "Stonyhurst," North Canterbury, states the "Press." There and at her town home, "Avonholme," Fendalton, she dispensed generous hosi pitality to many, including most of the distinguished persons who visited Christchurch during her'husband's lifetime. After Sir George's death in 1930, Lady Clifford lived quietly, first, at "Crutchley," Cashmere "Hills, and later at Sumner. Lady Clifford was a splendid horsewoman, and in her earlier life, she and her husband undertook many long trips on horseback. She was greatly interested in\amateur photography and was an indefatigable knitter, making thousands of garments, mostly for distribution amongst the needy. Her generosity was unbounded and every charitable, philanthropic, and patriotic appeal made to her received immediate and generous response. She is survived by three daughters —Mrs. G. R. Macdonald, "Lowry Hills," Cheviot, Mrs. Bruce Douglas, "Glenesk," Greta, and Mrs. G. Sapio, Cashmere Hills. Her sister, Miss A. Dennis, lived with her during the last few years. Sir Walter Clifford, the present holder of the title, is a brother-in-law. "~
