Auckland.—Another decrease in the amount of Customs revenue collected at Auckland was recorded during April, the latest figure being £220,538, compared with £284,153 in April, 1940, a difference of £63,615. For the first four months of 1941 Customs > collections have been £161,031 less "than for the corresponding period of 1940.

For the monthly and four-monthly periods motor spirit'duty returns show declines, but there have been increases in collections from beer duties' ' and sales tax.

April collections are, figures for April, 1940, being given in parenthesesi—Customs, £220,538 (£284,153)}, motor spirit duty at 6d a gallon,, £58,081 (£63,282); tyre duty, £4630 (£2445); total, £283,249 (£349,880). Excise on beer, £32,911 (£30,896) j sales tax, £99,816 (£90,445); collections payable to War Expenses Account, £117,283 (£16,989).

Christchurch. —Customs returns for April, with the figures for April,. IS4O, in parentheses, are:—Customs duty, £69,133 (£75,507); beer excise, £19,963 (£16,275); petrol tax, £24,059 (£21,885); tyre tax, £134 (£784); sales tax, £38,451 (£38,065); light dues, £173 (£162); export levies on wool, £90 (£268); on hides, £83 (£69); war expenses fund, £45,155 (£6238); miscellaneous, £35 (£14); totals, £197,276 (£159,267).

Dunedin.—Customs revenue from all sources collected in Dunedin during April showed a reduction of just over £8000 compared with returns for the same month last year, the respective figures being £153,347 and £161,598.

There was a considerable drop -in Customs duty, the collection for the month just ended being more than £17,000 below the duty received in April of last year. Beer, duty also decreased sharply, the month's receipts of £30,974 being close on £15,000 below the figure for .April, 1940, which was £45,356. Sales tax returns were also approximately £1000 lower, but the War Expenses Account was approximately three times as great as it was last year because the extra sales tax had not then been included in the account. There was practically no change in petrol tax receipts.

Following are figures for the month, those for April last year being in parentheses:—Customs duty, £42,635 (£59,761); beer duty, £30,974 (£45,356); sales tax, £28,511 (£29,412); War Expenses Account, £37,731 (£12,662); gold tax, £1041. (£1054); tyre, tax, £16 (£398); petrol tax, £12,004 (£12,644); miscellaneous, £534 (£309); totals, £153,347 (£161,598).
