SERVICE AT PETONE
"Today's is the saddest of a long list of Anzac services, because it is sacred to the memory, not only of those who fell in the Great War, but of those who have fallen in the present one," said Mr. J. C Burns, Deputy-Mayor of Petone, at the service in the Petone grandstand yesterday morning. He expressed the heartfelt hope that the next Anzac Day service would be held in times of peace.
One of the largest gatherings yet to attend took part in the service, which was arranged by the Ministers' Fraternal. The singing of "O God Our Help in Ages Past," Kipling's "Recess-
ional," and "O God of Love, O King of Peace," was most, impressive. The Salvation -Army and Petone Citizens' Bands were in attendance.
In his address, the Rev. H. S. I. Kenney said that memories of the blood and tears and sacrifice of the Great War were clouded by the realisation that blood and tears and sacrifice were again the lot of the people of New Zealand. In the historic land of Greece, hs on Gallipoli 26 - years ago. New Zealanders were adding new lustre to the name of Anzac. The day had become a national one, and. even more than that, a clay of rededication. Only one thing could be said in justification for the waging of war, and that was that from it would emerge a world in which there never again could be a repetition of events which had characterised the world from 1914 to the present day. After the service a strong contingent of ex-servicemen paid their respects at the Petone War Memorial.
